Since the debut of the anime adaptation of Akira Toriyama's Dragon Ball manga in 1986, Toei Animation has produced twenty theatrical films based on the franchise: four based on the original Dragon Ball anime, fifteen based on the sequel series Dragon Ball Z and one film based on the Dragon Ball Super series. This blog will focus on the fifteen films that was based on the sequel Dragon Ball Z.

Dragon Ball Z: Dead Zone, originally released theatrically in Japan as simply Dragon Ball Z and later as Dragon Ball Z: Return My Gohan!! for its Japanese VHS and Laserdisc release, is a 1989 Japanese anime fantasy martial arts film, the fourth alternate continuity film in the Dragon Ball franchise, and the first one under the Dragon Ball Z moniker. It was originally released in Japan on July 15 at the "Toei Manga Matsuri" film festival along with the 1989 film version of Himitsu no Akko-chan, the first Akuma-kun movie, and the film version of Kidou Keiji Jiban.

Dragon Ball Z: The World's Strongest , also known by Toei's own English title The Strongest Guy in the World, is a 1990 Japanese animated science fiction martial arts film and the second feature movie in the Dragon Ball Z franchise. It was originally released in Japan on March 10 between episodes 39 and 40 of DBZ, at the "Toei Manga Matsuri" film festival along with the second Akuma-kun movie (Welcome To Devil Land) and the 1990 movie version of Sally the Witch. It was released on VHS and DVD in North America on May 26, 1998, with an English dub, produced by Pioneer Home Entertainment in association with Funimation. Pioneer's dub used the original Ocean Productions voice cast of the TV series. The film was later re-dubbed by Funimation's in-house voice cast and released again to DVD on November 14, 2006, in a box set titled "First Strike," which included Dead Zone and The Tree of Might. It was later remastered and released in a Double Feature set with Dead Zone on Blu-ray and DVD on May 27, 2008. The film was released to DVD again on November 1, 2011, in a remastered box set containing the first five Dragon Ball Z movies.

Dragon Ball Z: Lord Slug, also known by its Japanese title Dragon Ball Z: Son Goku the Super Saiyan, is a 1991 Japanese animated science fictionmartial arts film and the fourth Dragon Ball Z feature movie. It was originally released in Japan on March 9 between episodes 81 and 82 at the Toei Anime Fair as part of a double feature with the first Magical Tarurūto-kun movie. An American English dub was produced by Funimation and released to VHS and DVD on August 7, 2001. Two other English dubs were also produced, one in France by AB Groupe done for European markets which was released under the misspelt title Super Saiya Son Goku, and another one for a Malaysian VCD release by Speedy Video which had the title Super Saiya People, Goku. While the Malaysian dub's cast remains unknown, the AB Groupe dub was revealed to have been recorded by English-speaking actors based in France who have also done voices for animated television series such as Code Lyoko and Chris Colorado.

Dragon Ball Z: Cooler's Revenge, also known by its Japanese title Dragon Ball Z: The Incredible Mightiest vs. Mightiest, or by Toei's own English title Dragon Ball Z: The Strongest Rivals, is a 1991 Japanese anime science fiction martial arts film and the fifth Dragon Ball Z animated feature movie, originally released in Japan on July 20 at the Toei Anime Fair. In 1996, Creative Products Corporation made an English dub for the Philippines with the title Dragon Ball Z: Battle of the Strongest. It was shown in theatres and was released on VHS there. Funimation released the film in North America with an English dub to VHS and DVD on January 22, 2002. It was also shown on Cartoon Network. It was later remastered and released in a Double Feature set with Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, on Blu-ray and DVD on May 27, 2008. The film was released to DVD again on November 1, 2011 in a remastered box set containing the first five Dragon Ball Z movies.

Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z: Clash!! The Power of 10 Billion Warriors  or by Toei's own English title Dragon Ball Z: Fight! 10 Billion Power Warriors, is a 1992 Japanese anime science fiction martial arts film, the sixth Dragon Ball Z movie, originally released in Japan on March 7 at the Toei Anime Fair along with the second Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken and the third Magical Tarurūto-kun movie. It was released on DVD in the United States on August 13, 2002. It also had a special theater presentation as part of a double-feature with Fusion Reborn on March 17, 2006. These movies are the first Dragon Ball-related movies to receive a theatrical release in the United States. This film, alongside Cooler's Revenge, was re-released to DVD and Blu-ray in a double feature on November 11, 2008. It was later re-released to DVD again on December 6, 2011 in a remastered 4-pack with the next three films in the series.

Dragon Ball Z: Super Android 13, known in Japan as Extreme Battle! The Three Great Super Saiyans,  is a 1992 Japanese animescience fiction martial arts film and the seventh Dragon Ball Z movie. It was originally released in Japan on July 11 at the Toei Anime Fair along with the third Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibōken movie and the Rokudenashi Blues movie. The movie was released in North America by Funimation on February 4, 2003. The movie was re-released to DVD and Blu-ray with Bojack Unbound and in a double feature on February 10, 2009. Early concept art for the reissue used the title Android Assault, but the final product went back to using Funimation's original title for the film. It was re-released to DVD again in a movie 4-pack with The Return of Cooler and the next two films in the series on December 6, 2011.

Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z: Burn Up!! A Close Fight - A Violent Fight - A Super Fierce Fight or by Toei's own English title Dragon Ball Z: The Burning Battles, is a 1993 Japanese anime science fiction martial arts film and the eighth Dragon Ball Z feature movie. The original release date in Japan was on March 6, 1993 at the Toei Anime Fair alongside Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: N-cha! Clear Skies Over Penguin Village. It was dubbed into English by Funimation in 2003. The antagonist Broly was designed by series creator Akira Toriyama.^[1] This film is the first of four featuring the character, followed by Broly – Second Coming and Bio-Broly in 1994, and Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018.

Dragon Ball Z: Bojack Unbound, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z: The Galaxy's at the Brink!! The Super Incredible Guy,  is a 1993 Japanese animated science fantasy martial arts film and the ninth Dragon Ball Z feature movie. It was released in Japan on July 10 at the Toei Anime Fair, where it was shown alongside Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: N-cha! From Penguin Village with Love and the first YuYu Hakusho movie. The antagonist Bojack was designed by series creator Akira Toriyama. The film is the last to feature Kōhei Miyauchi as Kame-Sennin, who died two years after its release. An English version was produced by Funimation and released on August 17, 2004. The movie was re-released to DVD and Blu-ray in a double feature with Super Android 13! and Dragon Ball Z Season 8 on February 9, 2009. It was re-released again to DVD on December 9, 2011 in a movie 4-pack with the previous three films.

Dragon Ball Z: Broly – Second Coming, known in Japan as The Dangerous Duo! Super Warriors Never Rest or by Toei's own English title Dragon Ball Z: Dangerous Rivals, is a 1994 Japanese anime science fiction martial arts film and the tenth Dragon Ball Z feature movie. It was released in Japan on March 12 at the Toei Anime Fair alongside Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: Hoyoyo!! Follow the Rescued Shark... and the first Slam Dunk movie. It is the sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan.The second sequel is Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly. It was released in North America on April 5, 2005. In 2007, Funimation re-released this movie and Broly – The Legendary Super Saiyan on Blu-ray. Both feature full HD 1080p (or 720p) resolution with digitally remastered animation, and an enhanced 5.1 surround mix. It was re-released to DVD and Blu-ray on March 31, 2009 in a triple feature with the original Broly film, as well as Bio-Broly. It was re-released in a movie 4-pack on January 3, 2012, containing the final four original DBZ films.

Dragon Ball Z: Bio-Broly, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z Super Warrior Defeat!! I'll Be The Winner or by Toei's own English title Dragon Ball Z: Attack! Super Warriors, is a 1994 Japanese animated science fiction martial arts film and the eleventh Dragon Ball Zfeature movie. It was released in Japan on July 9 at the Toei Anime Fair alongside Dr. Slump and Arale-chan: N-cha!! Excited Heart of Summer Vacation and the second Slam Dunk movie. It was dubbed into English by Funimation in 2005. It was the third and final Dragon Ball movie to feature the character of Broly, until the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018, which features a different version of the character.

Dragon Ball Z: Wrath of the Dragon, known in Japan as Dragon Ball Z Ryū-Ken Bakuhatsu!! It was originally released in Japan on July 15 at the Toei Anime Fair. It was later dubbed into English by Funimation in 2006, just like most of the other Dragon Ball films. It was also released on VCD in Malaysia by Speedy Video with the subtitle Explosion of Dragon Punch. Set after the events of the final battle with Majin Buu, the film focuses on the efforts of an evil magician, Hoi, to release the deadly monster Hirudegarn onto the Earth, forcing Goku and his friends to enlist the aid of a warrior named Tapion, who may be the only one capable of defeating the monster. Series creator Akira Toriyama designed the Tapion and Minoshia characters.

Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods is a 2013 Japanese animated science fantasy martial arts film, the eighteenth feature film based on the Dragon Ball series, and the fourteenth to carry the Dragon Ball Z branding, released in theaters on March 30. It is the first Dragon Ball movie in 17 years to have a theatrical release, the last being the tenth anniversary movie in 1996, which followed the first three Dragon Ball films and the thirteen Dragon Ball Z films. Son Goku is a fictional character and main protagonist of Dragon Ball manga series created by Akira Toriyama. Vegeta is the prince of the fallen Saiyan race and the deuteragonist of the Dragon Ball series.
